How Many Guests Per Table? A Wedding & Event Seating Guide
Updated: 2026-07-01
“How many guests per table?” is one of the first questions when organising a reception, because it drives your table count, rental budget and how the room feels. Here are practical numbers.
Round tables
- 60-inch (5 ft): comfortably 8 guests, up to 10 if tight. The most popular wedding size.
- 72-inch (6 ft): comfortably 10, up to 12 at a squeeze.
- 48-inch (4 ft): 6 guests — good for an intimate reception.
Rectangular and banquet tables
- 6 ft banquet table: 6–8 guests.
- 8 ft banquet table: 8–10 guests. Long “feasting” rows use these.
- Head table: allow about 24 inches of width per person.
Comfortable vs. maximum
Every table has a maximum and a comfortable number — not the same. For a seated dinner plan the comfortable number; save the maximum for cocktail-style events.
How size changes the room
Fewer, larger tables mean more dance floor but harder conversation; more, smaller tables feel intimate but cost more and eat floor space. Lay it out against your real dimensions with a drag-and-drop floor plan, then assign people using our seating-chart guide.
